Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC)

What This Test Measures
TIBC measures maximum transferrin iron-binding capacity. Rises in iron deficiency, falls in iron overload and chronic inflammation.
Transferrin saturation = (Iron / TIBC) × 100%. Saturation <16% — iron deficiency; >45% — overload.
TIBC complements ferritin to differentiate iron deficiency from anemia of chronic disease.

FAQ
How often should I take this test?
In iron deficiency workup — once, recheck after 4–8 weeks of therapy.
What should I do if my result is abnormal?
Low saturation + low ferritin — start iron therapy; high saturation — hemochromatosis screening.
